Sudbury is our second garden centre. Our first, Perrywood Tiptree, has been operating since the 1950s when Alan Bourne’s parents bought the land and called it Perrywood Nurseries – growing potatoes and pick-your-own strawberries. In 1984, Alan and wife Karin took over the business and it is now an award-winning garden centre which is run with their three children Hannah, Simon and Tristan.
We took over Perrywood Sudbury (formerly the Wyevale Sudbury Garden Centre) on 24 September, 2018, and it will continue to be a garden centre and coffee shop. We are keen to preserve the history and growing heritage of the site. We are potty about plants and have improved the range and quality of the outdoor and indoor plants, and brought in Perrywood touches – such as ‘how to’ leaflets and our Perrywood Grown range of bedding plants, we’ve also fully refurbished the Coffee Shop and are serving our famously tasty homemade breakfast, lunches and cakes.
Perrywood is an independent, family-owned garden centre and nursery run by the Bourne Family in Essex. Our vision is to inspire people to get more plants in their lives. Our every day mission is to offer a memorable garden centre experience; delivering wow customer service and giving employees, customers, suppliers and our local community a reason to smile. History of Perrywood Tiptree - where it all began!
Perry Wood is next to the site and lent its name to the business back in the 50’s when Alan Bourne’s parents, Mary and Les, bought the land and called it Perrywood Nurseries. They started out growing potatoes and pick-your-own strawberries. After working for Colchester parks department, and seeing the supermarkets begin to take over the strawberry market, son Alan Bourne started to grow plants to sell from the front of the property and took over the business with his wife Karin in 1984. Over the next 30 years they gradually grew the site into an award-winning garden centre which now attracts customers from all over Essex and further afield and have recently opened their second Garden Centre here in Sudbury.
