‘How to’? Get outdoors in January

Top 10 things to do in the garden this month (source: RHS)

  • Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch
  • Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days
  • Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already
  • Repair and re-shape lawn edges
  • Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia, and Canna for rots or drying out
  • Prune apple and pear trees
  • Start forcing rhubarb
  • Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season
  • Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds – see our ‘How to’? Attract Birds To Your Garden guide
  • Prepare a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect them from peach leaf curl

Other jobs you can do this month:

  • Tidy your garden shed
  • Plant bare-root – hedging, trees, fruit, or roses
  • Clean old plant labels
  • Sharpen your secateurs

You can also start buying seeds, onion sets, garlic, and seed potatoes, which are all in stock now, for your 2021 veg plot. If you don’t have space for a large vegetable bed you could think about getting a Veg Trug or patio pots to grow vegetables in. Even potatoes can be grown in potato bags or pots.
